Focus Areas: Natural Language Processing, Clinical Documentation Tools, Clinical Terminology

Overall Impact at Cerner Corporation
At Cerner, I managed NLP and clinical documentation tools that directly supported clinician workflows and CDI initiatives. My work in Chart Assist, Virtual Scribe, and Health Concepts strengthened clinical accuracy, reduced documentation burden, and advanced the integration of AI into Cerner’s product suite. This role laid the foundation for my expertise in clinical terminology, NLP, and product management at scale.

  • I managed Chart Assist, an AI-enabled clinical documentation improvement tool designed to reduce provider burden and improve the accuracy of documentation at the point of care.

    • Users: Clinicians, coding specialists, and CDI teams.

    • Use Cases: Identifying documentation gaps, suggesting improvements, and ensuring accurate coding and reimbursement.

    • Value I Brought:

      • Partnered with engineering and fellow product owners to define and deliver enhancements.

      • Connected Chart Assist outputs to downstream workflows in CDI and HIM.

      • Ensured the product aligned with clinician workflows, improving adoption and usability.

  • I supported Virtual Scribe, a product aimed at using NLP and automation to reduce the time clinicians spent on documentation.

    • Value I Brought:

      • Guided improvements in transcription workflows to align with clinician needs.

      • Partnered with engineering to integrate NLP models that increased accuracy.

      • Helped position Virtual Scribe as part of Cerner’s broader strategy to reduce documentation time.

  • I oversaw the Health Concepts Service, which extracted concepts from clinical documentation across sections such as allergies, labs, procedures, medications, and family history.

    • Users: Clinical and downstream product teams.

    • Use Cases: Identifying and normalizing concepts to support clinical decision support, analytics, and interoperability.

    • Value I Brought:

      • Collaborated with engineering and product teams to ensure comprehensive concept coverage.

      • Defined mapping and validation workflows to improve data quality.

      • Strengthened downstream product capabilities through more accurate NLP concept extraction.

  • I contributed to multiple internal tools that supported NLP and terminology workflows:

    • DML Tool (Mapping and Validation): Ensured accurate mapping of proprietary concepts to standard terminologies.

    • Cerner Namespace Browser: Managed namespace IDs when codes were not available in SNOMED.

    • NLP Rules and Intent Accuracy Tools: Improved NLP by testing intent recognition rules and validation accuracy.

    • Calibration Application: Streamlined annotation review, document validation, and concept accuracy testing.

    • Cerner NLP Demo and NLP Services Demo: Designed product demos to highlight NLP capabilities for internal and external stakeholders.

  • I led initiatives to manage Cerner’s NLP products, aligning them with evolving clinical and technical requirements.

    • Value I Brought:

      • Created end-to-end workflow processes for terminology and NLP teams.

      • Developed documentation and best practices for adding to dictionaries, creating value sets, and testing intent rules.

      • Improved consistency and efficiency across NLP-driven products.
